Privacy Policy

We built Cellar IQ to be a tool you trust with your collection. That means being straightforward about what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it. This policy explains all of that in plain English.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information in two ways: information you provide directly, and information generated automatically when you use the service.

Information you provide:

Account details — your name, email address, and password when you register
Cellar data — bottles you add, including producer, vintage, purchase price, tasting notes, and storage location
Payment information — processed by our payment provider; we never see or store your full card number
Communications — anything you send to us via email or feedback forms

Information generated automatically:

Usage data — pages visited, features used, and actions taken within the app
Device information — browser type, operating system, and IP address
Session data — login timestamps and authentication tokens

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your data to:

Provide and improve the Cellar IQ service
Personalize your experience — for example, surfacing AI insights about your specific bottles
Process your subscription and send billing-related communications
Send transactional emails (account confirmation, receipts, important service notices)
Respond to your support requests
Analyze usage patterns to improve the product
Detect and prevent fraud or abuse

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your cellar data to train AI models.

3. Data Sharing

We share data only when necessary to operate the service, and only with service providers who are contractually bound to protect it. These providers include:

Authentication provider — manages user accounts and secure login
Payment processor — handles subscription billing; subject to PCI-DSS compliance
AI provider — processes queries you send to the AI Sommelier feature
Wine data provider — used to look up valuations and critic scores for bottles in your cellar
Analytics provider — collects anonymized usage data to help us understand how the product is used

We may also disclose data if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or the public.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on servers located in the United States. We use industry-standard security practices including encrypted connections (TLS), hashed passwords, and row-level security on our database so that users can only access their own data.

No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. If we become aware of a security breach affecting your data, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

5. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate data
Deletion — request that we delete your account and associated data
Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
Opt-out of analytics — you can opt out of usage tracking by contacting us

California residents (CCPA): You have the right to know what personal information we collect and sell (we do not sell personal information), and the right to request deletion. To exercise these rights, contact us at the email above.

EEA/UK residents (GDPR): Our lawful basis for processing your data is contract performance (providing the service you signed up for) and legitimate interests (improving the product and preventing fraud). You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

6. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you logged in, remember your preferences, and understand how you use the service. We use:

Essential cookies — required for authentication and session management; cannot be disabled
Analytics cookies — used to understand usage patterns; you can opt out by contacting us

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

7. Third-Party Services

Cellar IQ integrates with third-party services to deliver its features. Each provider has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data sent to them. We recommend reviewing those policies if you have concerns. The categories of providers we use are: authentication, payment processing, AI inference, wine market data, and product analytics.

8. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or compliance reasons (for example, billing records may be retained for up to 7 years).

9. Children's Privacy

Cellar IQ is not directed at children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe we have collected data from a minor, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or by posting a notice in the app. The effective date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version. Continued use of Cellar IQ after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
